Emily Sullivan Smith
Emily Sullivan Smith is an Assistant Professor and the Foundations Coordinator at the University of Dayton’s Department of Art and Design. Having received an MFA from Kent State University in printmaking, her studio practice is interdisciplinary and consists of both printmaking and sculpture. Her work focuses on the ever-changing relationship between humans and the natural world. A quote from noted naturalist, John Muir, is ever-present in the work “When one tugs at a single thing in nature he finds it attached to the rest of the world”.
As an educator, Sullivan Smith has been an active participant in technology integration in the fine arts classroom. She views art making and teaching as an all encompassing and integrated experience. Recent exhibitions include; a solo exhibition, Plight of Abundance, at Alexander Brest Gallery, University of Jacksonville, FL, a collaborative two-person exhibition, Your Place or Mine, at Kent State University in Kent, Ohio, the 32nd Annual International Exhibition at the University of Texas at Tyler, Armstrong National 2D Exhibition, in Savannah, Georgia, The 30th Annual Tallahassee International, in Tallahassee Florida, Potsdam Prints in Potsdam, New York, where the work received a juror’s award. Sullivan Smith was recently interviewed on the podcast, Positive Space, produced in coordination with FATE. She also serves on the board of Integrative Teaching International as the Associate Vice President for Development.
