    2017 Educators Showcase: Joe Hedges

Joe Hedges is an intermedia artist living and working in the inland northwest, United States.  Hedges paintings, digital prints, videos and internet art projects explore the links between science and art through the visual language of the experiment and the archive.  With a reverence for art history, and an enthusiastic interest in the effects of digital technologies on human experience, Hedges’ work melds vocabularies and media. In the summer of 2015 Hedges' digital images were included in a group show Momento/Memento at Reverse Space, a contemporary gallery in New York City.  Hedges recently had a solo exhibition at The Art Academy of Cincinnati in Cincinnati, OH and was selected for a new media exhibition at the CICA museum in Gimpo-si, Gyeonggi-do, South Korea.

As an educator Hedges has taught painting, foundations and digital imaging at Northern Kentucky University, Miami University Hamilton and currently works at Washington State University coordinating the painting program as Assistant Professor of Painting/Intermedia, looking at painting as a form of media technology and exploring ways painting can interface with other disciplines and media. In 2015 Hedges presented a paper about color theory and magenta at FATE conference, and contributed to an Integrative Education International Future Forward paper about The Three R's (Risk, Research & Rigor).

As a curator Hedges has works with experimental curatorial collective Near*By (nearbycollective.org) to stage ephemeral and interdisciplinary exhibitions that connect artists and pluralistic audiences.

Hedges holds a BFA with an emphasis in painting from Northern Kentucky University and an MFA from the University of Cincinnati’s DAAP– College of Design, Architecture, Art & Planning.  www.joehedges.com
